Our Timber Systems division is the UK’s leading designer and manufacturer of timber frame building solutions, specialising in off-site construction. We work on over 350 live projects per year, supporting customers on-site and building timber kits across our two bespoke factories in Westhill – Aberdeenshire, Witney – Oxfordshire and in an additional hub space in Falkirk. We have regional offices in Aberdeenshire, Glasgow and Witney and the team operate across several sectors including, private housing, affordable housing, student accommodation, medical facilities, hotels, and education. Working with market-leading precision-engineered build systems, architects, surveyors and design teams, the division delivers noticeable benefits for our clients.

The role

Reporting to the Design Manager the role is to manage a team of Design Technicians and Trainee Design Technicians to undertake timber frame or roof truss designs. This will include planning and management of the team in line with operational targets, continuous development and training for team, and building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders. In addition to the management duties the role will also include preparation of timber frame designs.

In keeping with the specific importance given to Health & Safety and the Environment by the Donaldson Group you have specific accountabilities as set out in our Corporate Responsibility for Health & Safety and Environmental Policy.

Accountabilities

  • Manage the team to ensure delivery of designs which meets criteria for customer service, HSE&Q, budgetary limitations and working within the standard system protocols
  • Ensure accuracy of pre-design, production for walls floors, roofs, setting out and detail drawings; fabrication drawings and CAD-CAM data for timber frame, roof truss, steel, stair flights etc, quantification and creation of Bills of Materials for all components, and associated document control.
  • Ensure design meets agreed standards for programme compliance, quality and materials.
  • Motivate and continuously develop required skills within your team to ensure delivery of all operational targets within your area of responsibility
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships, personally and for the department and company as a whole, with internal and external stakeholders to maximise business plan delivery
  • Ensure designs are value engineered to support internal and external customers on design queries and proactively offer appropriate solutions.
  • Proactively manage project design variations.

Essential Technical Expertise

  • Effective communication.
  • Demonstrate organisational skills, ability to manage & report information.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and specialist software, Consultec Faming, Mitek PAMIR (or similar)
  • Knowledge of timber frame design, engineering principles and the ability to design for manufacturing, logistics and on site installation.
  • Understanding of building practises, regulations and other industry guidance, such as TRADA, STA, NHBC.
